It isn’t known for certain whether or not a heart attack immediately preceded his fall. What IS known is that he had a heart attack at some point prior to his death, and also suffered from hypertension and
congestive heart failure. So the main point Sophie is making is correct.

And ignorant people are those, like yourself, who are brainwashed by one person who wrote a couple of books. Do some actual research and you will find that the whole “carbs are killing you” thing is laughable. What’s killing people is eating too much and not moving enough, period.

also worth pointing out the confounding factors, such as vegans tend to be health conscious people (hence dietary choices) and would therefore be healthier than the average omnivore that could well eat several cakes/takeaways/sweets and other junk food (all high refined carb and industrial oil based food) every week (or even day). a more accurate comparison would be comparing vegans to the paleo/primal crowd, which would minimise any confounders, leaving basically a comparison between lowfat grain/ starch based diet and high fat meat based diet (with similar amounts of non starchy fruit and veg)

I need to correct myself above – this comment was made late, and I miswrote.

I was meaning to reply about ketosis, NOT gluconeogenesis.

I had meant to say that KETOSIS can go on indefinitely as long as there is adequate fat intake once the body uses it’s stores.

Gluconeogenesis, the energy our bodies get from turning protein into fat, is not what I meant to refer to.  Gluconeogenesis can turn EXCESS protein to fat, but rarely does so in the absence of carbohydrates.  It’s pretty difficult for the average human to even eat enough protein at a sitting to have excesses that will turn to fat, unless of course one were also eating many grams of carbohydrates along with.

Funny how our human ancestors were able to survive thousands of years of ice ages, when carbohydrates were most definitely NOT a part of their diets.

YOU should go back and take some biochemistry – gluconeogenesis can go on indefinitely, as long as there is adequate fat intake once the body has burned all of it’s stores.  The brain converts to burning ketones quite adequately after about a two-week adjustment period, and most experienced low-carbers including myself, report much clearer thinking throughout the day without the blood sugar surges and crashes (i.e. “carb coma)  that a carbohydrate-rich diet causes the body to suffer.

And the heart, ah the heart – the heart prefers, and actually runs much more efficiently on fat alone. This is in fact because the body’s fat stores are a much more consistent and safe form of fuel for the heart, which is the one organ that needs that consistent energy the most to function at it’s consistent best.  The constant lags and surges in energy that are inherent in carbohydrate metabolism are the worst form of fuel for an organ constantly running in such a metered fashion.

No one is arguing that some carbohydrate is probably necessary for OPTIMUM health – but more for their vitamin, mineral, and fiber contributions than as any form of fuel for the body.

You body can only do so much gluconeogenosis (your body producing glucose from non-carb sources) and your brain can only run about 25% off of other sources of fuel other than glucose from carbohydrates

Maybe if some people would take a few biochemistry classes or nutrition class then they would stop getting this kind of stuff wrong…..
